Alan Muir, former editor of the Scottish Sun, now works for the People’s Postcode Lottery, sharing positive stories about lottery winners. Unlike typical journalism focused on negative news, Muir and his team bring uplifting news directly to people's doorsteps, a role he calls "life-affirming" after 40 years in the industry.
Muir spent three decades at the Scottish Sun, rising from reporter to editor. Today, he leads the Postcode Lottery’s winners’ stories team. He personally visits winners to deliver news of prizes, sometimes involving shares of a million pounds.
Working alongside communications officer Pamela Stirling and news reporter Craig Stewart, Muir’s team functions like a newsroom. They interview winners and prepare stories for local and national media, with the winners’ consent.
“It’s turning the clock back 40-odd years for me to being a junior reporter knocking a door – there’s no difference at all,” Muir said. “It’s what I always loved to do… every single week is different.”
With winners announced daily, the team operates under tight deadlines to produce stories quickly. Last year, they traveled 120,000 miles to reach winners at their homes across Great Britain, emphasizing extensive on-the-ground reporting.
Alan Muir transitioned from a tabloid editor to a lottery news editor, finding renewed joy in delivering daily good news stories across Britain, combining decades of journalism experience with positive storytelling.
