Spaniards' Views on Franco Era

A recent national survey in Spain reveals that one in five Spaniards believe the 36-year Franco dictatorship was either 'good' or 'very good' for the country.

According to the October barometer by the Centro de Investigaciones Sociologicas (CIS), 21.3% of respondents view Franco's rule positively, with 16.8% describing it as 'good' and 4.5% as 'very good'.

In contrast, 39.1% of respondents described Franco's regime as 'very bad' and 26.4% as 'bad', while 6.1% called it 'so-so' and 7.2% either did not know or refused to answer.

The finding is particularly striking among young adults aged 18 to 24, who displayed an affinity for the dictator when quizzed.

The poll's results come just weeks before the 50th anniversary of Franco's death on November 20, 1975.
