Canadian actor Mike Smith, best known for portraying Bubbles in the long-running mockumentary series Trailer Park Boys, has been formally charged with sexual assault in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The alleged incident reportedly occurred in 2017.

According to court filings obtained by CBC News, Smith, 53, was charged on October 2 in connection with an alleged assault said to have taken place in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Authorities have placed a publication ban on the alleged victim’s identity, and Smith has been prohibited from contacting the individual.

“We are aware of the allegation concerning Mike Smith dating back to 2017 and take such matters seriously. We recognize how difficult an allegation of this nature is for all involved,”

the production company Trailer Park Boys Inc. stated in a release to PEOPLE.

“Out of respect for the legal process, we will not comment further on the case.”

The company also confirmed that Smith has stepped away from his position as managing director while the case proceeds. The actor has not made any public statement regarding the charge.
