Millions of Australians along the east coast are preparing for potentially severe storms and heavy rain this weekend following a turbulent start to the storm season.
Late afternoon and evening thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds are expected in Sydney on both Friday and Saturday, after warm daytime temperatures.
Jonathon Howe, a forecaster at the Bureau of Meteorology, reported that much of southeastern Australia will experience several unsettled days over Friday and Saturday, triggered by a developing cold front.
“Today (Friday) we are looking at the possibility of thunderstorms all the way from southern Victoria across to South Australia and up into northern parts of NSW,” said Howe.
Areas from Wollongong to Sydney, Newcastle, the Hunter Region, Mid North Coast, and parts of inland Queensland could see heavy rain, strong winds, and large hail.
“Severe thunderstorms are possible through the day for the northwestern slopes of NSW, into southern inland Queensland and a large swath across Central Australia,” Mr. Howe added.
The developing cold front will maintain unsettled and potentially hazardous conditions across these regions over the weekend.
Author's summary: Eastern Australia faces an unsettled weekend with severe storms, damaging winds, and heavy rainfall expected across multiple regions due to a cold front.
