Former boxing champion Laila Ali has ended all talk of a potential return to the ring, confirming she will not face Claressa Shields. This statement officially puts an end to years of speculation about a possible clash between the two champions.
According to Complex, Ali made it clear she has no plans to come out of retirement to fight anyone, including Shields. She explained during an interview in July that while there was always interest in seeing her return, it would take extraordinary circumstances for that to happen.
“The rumor that I heard is that unless somebody has $15, $20 million, don’t even call me about a fight against Shields. Unless somebody calls me and says they have it, we’re not gonna have a conversation. I’m not trying to come back and fight, but if someone offered that kind of money, I would actually have to think about it.”
Following Ali’s comments, Claressa Shields, 30, responded on X with a fiery post, showing her willingness and confidence to face Ali.
“What a great weekend of boxing! Now @TheRealLailaAli, I’m the greatest now! You know I’ve been wanting to make you eat your words! You’re not a better boxer than me, and at 175 I’ll put you on your back!”
Ali, 47, remains one of the most respected names in women’s boxing, despite not having fought since 2007. Her record and influence continue to make her a central figure in the sport’s history, even as newer champions like Shields redefine its future.
