Justice Unveils Blueprint to Cut Remand Population

A legal thinktank, Justice, has introduced a plan to reduce the number of people jailed before their trial, citing that too many are being unnecessarily imprisoned.

Key components of the blueprint include flow charts to guide magistrates' decisions and increased support for legal advisers. This initiative aims to address prison overcrowding and the high remand population.

According to Justice's latest report, the remand population currently constitutes a fifth of the prison population, with 11,629 out of a record 17,071 people on remand awaiting trial.

The report highlights the inconsistent approach of magistrates towards remand, which was also noted in Justice's report two years ago.

Magistrates were not regularly following the law when jailing people awaiting trial.

Author's summary: Justice proposes a plan to reduce unnecessary pre-trial imprisonment.
