State leaders have stirred debate by recommending end-of-course state-administered tests for high schoolers.

Massachusetts needs new uniform assessments for high school graduation
According to Ed Lambert, executive director of the Massachusetts Business Alliance for Education, the state should create standardized end-of-course tests as a new graduation requirement.
The MCAS graduation requirement failed to close the state’s yawning achievement gaps. In comparing 10th-grade MCAS passing rates from 2006 to 2025, English language arts gaps grew across race, income, disability, and language.
These results call for a wholly different approach rather than a tired solution in new clothes.
