Two hundred years ago, DeWitt Clinton boarded a canal boat on the shores of Lake Erie, marking the beginning of a new era.
On this maiden voyage, Clinton's vessel, the Seneca Chief, traveled from Buffalo to Albany and then down the Hudson River to New York City, culminating in a ceremony on Nov. 4.

This event, which involved the ceremonial disgorging of barrels full of Lake Erie water into the Atlantic, was a celebration of the Erie Canal's completion.
The Erie Canal is an engineering marvel and a National Historic Monument, inspiring folk songs and leaving a lasting legacy, with even Abraham Lincoln dreaming of becoming "the DeWitt Clinton of Illinois."
