An investigation into Pa.'s mental health system reveals that the idea that people who can't or don't get help is their fault is being challenged.
As part of the examination, the newsroom analyzed thousands of pages of documents from 140 public records requests, reviewed state and local spending data, and conducted interviews with dozens of current and former government officials, advocates, and people navigating the mental health system.
No one is to blame, but the system is at fault.
To spread the reach of this work, Spotlight PA produced broadcast-ready video segments of the investigation, created by Mitch Blacher, a veteran broadcast journalist, as part of a first-of-its-kind partnership with a group of Nexstar television stations.
Author's summary: Pennsylvania's mental health system is failing those who need it most due to systemic issues.
