MP Battiste Proposes Study on Indian Act Sections

Mi'kmaw MP Jaime Battiste has tabled a motion to study sections of the Indian Act related to registration, specifically focusing on the impacts of sections that determine status Indian eligibility.

Battiste, representing the Cape Breton-Canso-Antigonish riding, appeared before the Senate's Standing Committee on Indigenous and Northern Affairs, requesting an amendment to Sections 6.1 and 6.2, also known as the "Second-Generation Cut-off", in collaboration with First Nation communities.

These sections, enacted in 1985, are under federal government authority, which oversees the Indian Act and status Indian eligibility in Canada.
