Listening to Nature's Voice
A new toolkit from Talking Rivers encourages organizations to reassess their connection with the natural world through language, governance, and the act of listening.
An old Haudenosaunee wisdom states:
“the Creator gave us two eyes, two ears, two nostrils, but only one mouth, so we would look, listen, and breathe twice as much as we speak.”
Observing the world around us reveals the fragmentation of ecosystems and relentless resource extraction. Instead of songbirds, the air is filled with the sounds of traffic and aircraft. The scent of pine is often replaced with the smell of wildfire smoke.
Nature constantly sends us signals, but we have learned to ignore them, drowning out its messages with our own noise.
