Tropical Cyclone Fina is forecast to approach Darwin in the Northern Territory on Saturday night. Authorities urge major sectors — including ports, mining, transport, and agriculture — to prepare for potential disruptions.
As of 9:30 a.m. ACST on Thursday, November 20, Fina was a category two cyclone positioned about 405 kilometers northeast of Darwin. The system recorded average wind speeds of 95 km/h, with gusts reaching 130 km/h.
Fina has shifted toward the Northern Territory coastline and may make landfall over the Top End region on Friday, November 21, 2025. After crossing the coast, it could regain strength over the warm waters of the Van Diemen Gulf before traveling close to Darwin during the weekend.
The last tropical cyclone to directly affect Darwin was Tropical Cyclone Marcus in March 2018.
Marcus delivered sustained winds of 96 km/h and gusts up to 126 km/h at Darwin Airport, causing over 6,400 insurance claims worth approximately USD $75 million (around AUD $97.5 million).
NT WorkSafe has called on Top End businesses to review and update their emergency procedures. Recommendations include securing worksites, checking operational equipment, preparing evacuation plans, and ensuring worker safety against potential hazards.
Author’s Summary: Tropical Cyclone Fina is projected to approach Darwin this weekend, posing safety and operational challenges for several key industries across the Northern Territory.
