Typhoon Fung-wong moved away from the northwestern Philippines on Monday after triggering floods, landslides, and power outages across entire provinces. The storm caused at least four fatalities and displaced over 1.4 million people. It was forecast to continue northwest toward Taiwan.
Fung-wong struck northern Philippines while the region was still recovering from Typhoon Kalmaegi, which had caused at least 224 deaths in central provinces before hitting Vietnam, where five more people died. Fung-wong made landfall in northeastern Aurora province Sunday night as a super typhoon with sustained winds up to 185 kph (115 mph) and gusts reaching 230 kph (143 mph).
The storm's 1,800-kilometer (1,100-mile) diameter shrank as it passed over mountainous northern provinces and agricultural plains overnight, then moved away from La Union province into the South China Sea, according to meteorologists.
