Celebrity chef talks about his new book that he will be signing at Waterstones in Morpeth

Rick Stein Discusses His New Book and Love for Christmas

Renowned TV chef and author Rick Stein will appear at Waterstones in Morpeth on Thursday, November 13, to sign copies of his latest release, Rick Stein’s Christmas. Ahead of the event, Caroline Dominey interviewed him about the inspiration behind the book and his personal connection to the festive season.

The Story Behind the Book

According to Stein, the idea for the Christmas book came from his wife, Sarah. She had often encouraged him to create a festive collection because Christmas holds a special place in her heart, particularly as an Australian who enjoys the traditions of the holiday in the UK.

“She’s Australian and one of the things she really loves about living in the UK is Christmas.”

Stein explained that once he began reflecting on seasonal recipes and memories, the book took shape naturally. For him, Christmas represents warmth, joy, and connection despite Britain’s rainy weather.

“I think we all love Christmas in our heart, it’s something that matters to us in this slightly rainy island and it was a joy to do.”

What Makes Christmas Special

When asked what defines the spirit of Christmas for him, Stein immediately mentioned festive food. He delights in preparing traditional dishes and experimenting with seasonal recipes.

Beyond the food, Stein enjoys the musical traditions of the season. His book includes a section on Christmas chart-toppers and his fondness for classic carols.

“There is a whole piece in the book about Christmas No 1’s! And I’ve always loved carols and carol services.”
