The Flavour in Food Labelling Modernization

The flavour of food must be appealing to sell a product, but often we cannot sample it before buying.

Instead, food labels are the primary means of communicating flavours on packaged consumer food.

According to Food in Canada, as of April 9, 2017, current federal labelling rules, including Food and Drug Regulations (FDR) and Consumer Packaging and Labelling Regulations (CPLR), have flexible requirements for flavour labelling.

The CPLR requires that prepackaged consumer food with a pictorial representation of certain ingredients on its label must identify the added presence of artificial, simulated, or imitation flavours if the product does not contain the represented natural substances or flavours.

Current federal labelling rules are fairly soft on the matter.

Author's summary: Food labels play a crucial role in communicating flavours to consumers.
