The federal Liberal minority government's 2025 budget includes funding increases for the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) to identify Hamilton's port as a container import and export location.
The City of Hamilton and the Hamilton-Oshawa Port Authority (HOPA) have campaigned for a CBSA customs station to enable importers and exporters to use port facilities.
Adding CBSA services at more Great Lakes ports "is essential to diversifying our trade."
HOPA reported its new inland rail terminal for containers was ready to open in May, but had not received CBSA approval for a sufferance warehouse to enable importers to clear customs at the port.
