“Frankly speaking, we felt happier in the past,” said local resident Myo Ko. “That kind of feeling is the best.”

Despite the war, the annual Tazaungdaing hot air balloon festival in Taunggyi, northern Shan State, continued, featuring goat, hippo and duck-shaped hot air balloons.

The festival provided a rare opportunity for escapism from the ongoing conflict.
