The high-powered defending Region 1-5A champion Brunswick Pirates rolled past South Effingham 46-19 on Friday, ending the Mustangs’ hopes of qualifying for the Class 5A state football tournament.
The win gave Brunswick its second straight region title and a No. 1 seeding heading into the state playoffs. The Pirates, who have punished opponents all season with an offense averaging more than 44 points per game, looked unstoppable early, jumping to a 38-0 lead by halftime.
South Effingham scored 19 second-half points, including a last-second Hail Mary from Jayden Hair, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Brunswick’s dominating first half.
Mustangs seniors, led by Corey Woods, were praised for their heart and season-long effort.
Brunswick has shown impressive offensive firepower, scoring 60 or more points three times this season.
