Myths and legends of Powys to turn to this Halloween

Myths and Legends of Powys for Halloween

The nights are drawing in, and there’s a chill in the air, making it the perfect time to settle down with stories of myths, ghosts, and legends of Powys.

In a lake near New Radnor, known as Llyn Heilyn, swans and wildlife thrive. Nearby is the Fforest Inn, a welcoming spot for visitors from Friday to Sunday.

A notable figure from the area is John Lloyd, also known as Silver John, who lived on a sheep farm in the Harley Valley. He earned his nickname after helping a local boy by setting his leg and refusing payment, instead accepting two silver buttons.

He became known locally as a bonesetter, with many people seeking his help.

However, in 1830, Silver John disappeared after visiting Builth Fair. Four months later, a tragic discovery was made when Mary, the daughter of the Fforest Inn's landlord, went skating on the iced surface of Llyn Heilyn lake. She slipped and fell, coming face to face with the frozen body of Silver John underneath the lake.
