Cheniya Jackson led South Effingham to a 6-0 win over Lassiter in the Class 5A softball championships opener on Thursday, pitching a three-hitter. The Mustangs broke open a scoreless duel with four runs in the fifth inning.
Effingham County lost to defending champion Creekview 7-0 in its first game of the double-elimination tournament.
South Effingham (24-3) advanced in the winners’ bracket to play the winner of Jackson County and Houston County at 5 p.m. Effingham County (27-8) will play again on Friday at 9 a.m.
