'Harvest Now, Decrypt Later' Attacks Drive Quantum Urgency

With IBM planning 1,000 logical qubits by 2033 and threat actors already stockpiling encrypted data, the quantum threat isn't a distant concern.

Organizations must consider Encryption & Key Management, as IBM's road map to deliver 1,000 logical qubits by 2033 means quantum computers capable of breaking RSA-2048 encryption could arrive by 2035.

"If you tell them it's 2035, they say 'that's 10 years later - why worry about it now?' … That's why I brought in about harvest now, decrypt later, because that's the key reason why we have to go in now,"

said Jon Lau, director of cybersecurity at the Agency for Science, Technology and Research in Singapore.

The timeline could accelerate further if state actors or well-funded entities pay technology companies for early access to quantum systems.

Author's summary: Quantum threat is approaching fast.
