Timor-Leste Joins ASEAN as 11th Member
Timor-Leste has officially been admitted to ASEAN, becoming its 11th member. The country first applied for membership in 2011 and received in-principle approval in 2022.
The announcement was made on October 26 at the 47th ASEAN Summit and related meetings in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This marks the first expansion of ASEAN in 26 years, since Cambodia's admission in 1999.
Timor-Leste's admission is a milestone for both the island nation and ASEAN, amid shifting geopolitical dynamics and global economic uncertainty.
