Mother Tongue Instruction Now Compulsory in Ghanaian Schools
The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that mother tongue instruction is now compulsory in all schools across Ghana.
Speaking at the launch of the Free Tertiary Education for Persons with Disabilities initiative in Accra, the Minister directed the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to ensure immediate enforcement of the new policy.
"I am directing the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service and the GES that from today, teacher use of mother tongue instruction is now compulsory in all Ghanaian schools,"
The Minister emphasized the importance of using mother tongue instruction, stating that the Ghanaian child deserves to learn in their native language, such as Ashanti or Akan, rather than only in English.
