Students at Independence High School are taking a hands-on approach to environmental sustainability by learning about composting, reducing food waste, and combating climate change through the school's Garden Club.
The club, led by sponsor Stephanie Ehrick, tends to various plant life while learning about environmental health and sustainability. The composting efforts are supported by the cafeteria, culinary program, and contributions from students and staff.
"I want our kids to know how amazing gardening can be — for your mental health and being able to stop and smell the roses,"
said Stephanie Ehrick. With the help of environmental science teacher Phuong Kieu and other partners, including the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality, the school is making strides in its sustainability efforts.
