Umatilla River Chinook salmon retention closed beginning Oct. 18

Umatilla River Chinook Salmon Retention Closed

Starting October 18, 2025, the adult daily salmon and steelhead bag limit on the Umatilla River from the Hwy 730 bridge upstream to Threemile Dam will be three fish total, but retention of Chinook will be closed.

The Oregon Dept. of Fish and Wildlife announced this closure due to low fall Chinook returns and increasing harvest rates.

The closure of Chinook retention is necessary to ensure broodstock collection goals at Threemile Dam can be met and to support the long-term sustainability of the fishery.

Before fishing, check the latest regulations by visiting the Recreation Report / Fishing Report for your zone, specifically the NE Zone Regulation updates.

Author's summary: Chinook salmon retention closed on Umatilla River.
