Montrose County Proposes Ordinance to Ban Non-Native Species

A proposed ordinance in Montrose County aims to prohibit the introduction of non-native animal species, including the Canadian gray wolf.

Under Ordinance No. 2025-01, bringing a wolf to Montrose County would be punishable by fines of up to $1,000 per day.

“We're introducing an apex predator into our communities and (into) an environment that literally can endanger endangered species that are federally protected,”

said Montrose County Commissioner Scott Mijares.
