Diwali Celebrations Across India

Diwali, or Deepavali, is celebrated differently in North and South India.

According to Devdutt Pattanaik, Author, Speaker, Illustrator, and Mythologist, in North India, Diwali celebrates the return of Ram from Ayodhya.

In South India, Diwali commemorates the defeat of Narakasura by Krishna, with celebrations taking place on the 14th day, on the eve of the new moon.

Thus, we find the north and south traditions are very different, one favouring Ram, the other favouring Krishna.

Author's summary: Diwali has different regional celebrations.
