Jury Deliberates in Murder Trial of Guards

The case against three state corrections officers accused of murdering inmate Robert Brooks is now in the hands of an Oneida County jury.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys presented their closing statements in a packed Utica courtroom, after which deliberations began around 4 p.m.

A group of prison guards at the Marcy Correctional Facility turned into “a gang of murderers” on the night of Dec. 9, 2024 - Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick.

According to Fitzpatrick, the guards launched three attacks on inmate Robert L. Brooks, ultimately leading to his death. An autopsy revealed injuries to his head, neck, testicles, liver, and spleen.

The jury will decide whether the guards showed a depraved indifference toward Brooks and are guilty of his murder.
