The chaotic energy of the HBO series I Love LA resonated with Leighton Meester. In the show, she portrays Alyssa, a classic Los Angeles publicist and boss to Maia, played by Rachel Sennott. Though the character differs from her own real-life experiences with publicity work, some aspects felt relatable for the actress.
In an interview, Meester discussed how the show’s themes reminded her of her personal past with difficult job environments. She mentioned that the relationship between Maia, who seeks a promotion, and Alyssa mirrors dynamics she has encountered herself.
"I've been in toxic work environments. I think that a lot of people have experienced that — being around people who sort of... I don't know, just, like, you have a boss that maybe doesn't uplift you, or whatever."
Josh Hutcherson, who stars alongside Meester, expressed surprise when hearing about her experiences. He asked with disbelief:
"In this industry, that's happened to you?"
To which Meester responded with a brief but telling reply:
"It's shocking."
Despite past difficulties, Meester said that working on I Love LA felt safe and creatively freeing. She described the process as a chance to explore the idea of a toxic workplace through a comedic lens rather than a harmful one.
"It was really fun to play with that dynamic in a safe, comedic environment. In some ways, it freed me to really feel the thrill of the ride."
Leighton Meester opened up about her past with toxic workplaces, contrasting them with the supportive and playful environment she found while filming I Love LA.
