Brock Nelson was browsing in a Toronto bookstore with his former New York Islanders teammate Matt Martin when he first discovered Violet Sorrengail, the heroine of Rebecca Yarros’ hit novel “Fourth Wing.” Meanwhile, goalie Scott Wedgewood got immersed in the dragon-filled world of the series while driving from Michigan to Denver.
More than 2,500 fans bought special tickets for “Fourth Wing” night at Ball Arena on Thursday. The event celebrates Yarros’ debut novel in the “Empyrean” series, and anticipation among readers and players alike is high. Colorado Springs resident and hockey mom Rebecca Yarros will attend in person, adding excitement to the night.
“I’m pumped for that night, the jersey, having Rebecca there,” said Nelson. “I’m hoping I get to meet her. It’s cool to have that connection now.”
Nelson recalled that last year someone told him the author of “Fourth Wing” had attended one of his games.
“I had no idea,” he said. “Then I saw that she’s a huge fan. Fast forward to now with ‘Fourth Wing’ night, and it’s pretty cool.”
The Yarros family are devoted Avalanche fans, even though Rebecca’s husband, who grew up on the East Coast, initially supported the Rangers. During a game in Denver last season, the family discussed her throwing the ceremonial first pitch at Fenway Park — another special moment for the author.
Rebecca Yarros’ “Fourth Wing” night at Ball Arena brings together enthusiastic fans and hockey players, uniting fiction and sport in an unexpectedly heartfelt celebration.
