U.S. airlines canceled more than 2,700 flights on Sunday, primarily due to the government shutdown and the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) directive to reduce air traffic.
The FAA last week mandated flight reductions as some air traffic controllers, unpaid for nearly a month, have stopped reporting to work.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned that if the shutdown continues through the busy Thanksgiving travel season, air traffic could “slow to a trickle.”

FlightAware, the air travel tracking website, reported nearly 10,000 flight delays on Sunday alone.
Author’s summary: The government shutdown has led to growing disruption in U.S. air travel, with thousands of cancelled flights and extensive delays as key air traffic control staff remain unpaid and absent.
