Ian Leavers, Queensland's cross-border commissioner, has died suddenly at his home. Police found him around 9:50 a.m., and while the death is not considered suspicious, investigations continue.
Leavers leaves behind a decades-long legacy of dedicated service to policing and the state. He was appointed cross-border commissioner in October of last year, tasked with supporting communities along Queensland's borders during critical rebuilding after COVID-19.
His career began in 1989 with the Queensland Police, where he served in numerous roles including general duties, traffic, accident investigations, and worked undercover in the Criminal Investigation Branch and Child Protection Investigation Unit. He was also known for his work as a trade unionist.
