Carol and Ned Spieker have donated $25 million to Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital to enhance care for mothers and babies in the West Building. Stanford Medicine Children’s Health plans to renovate the West Building, including the Johnson Center for Pregnancy and Newborn Services, to create more privacy for patients and greater comfort for families.
On October 23, the hospital announced it received this significant gift from Bay Area philanthropists Carol and Ned Spieker. Their donation will help fund the planned updates and improvements.
“[Carol and Ned Spieker’s] generosity helps turn our vision for a completely reimagined space into reality — to serve and support more families from our community and beyond,” said Luanne Smedley, executive director of the Johnson Center.
The Spiekers, who were fellows at Stanford’s Distinguished Careers Institute in 2016, shared that their children and grandchildren were born at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital. They expressed their commitment to supporting local families through this donation.
“We care deeply about helping growing families in our community get the best possible care,” the Spiekers said. “We feel fortunate that they are healthy and thriving, and we want to help ensure that future generations of moms and babies receive the support they need.”
Stanford’s hospital delivers approximately 4,500 babies each year, nearly a dozen daily, with 70% categorized as high-risk, according to Smedley. The renovations aim to better accommodate these critical cases.
