Former Super Eagles captain and midfield icon Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha has attributed the early phase of his football growth to his experiences in Germany, which he says shaped his discipline, mentality, and professional standards.
Born in Enugu in 1973, Okocha showed remarkable football talent from a young age. By 1990, he made the move to Germany at just 17, joining the third-division side Borussia Neunkirchen with little exposure to European football.
“Germany was my first stop, and I went there when I was just 17. I always say I went to Germany as a boy and left as a man,” Okocha recalled.
His exceptional skills quickly drew attention from scouts, leading him to progress through the ranks and eventually secure a move to a larger stage.
In 1992, Okocha signed with Eintracht Frankfurt, where he gained international recognition. During his time there, he scored his famous solo goal against Karlsruhe SC in 1993, a moment that cemented his reputation for creativity and technical brilliance.
Okocha emphasized that the discipline and professionalism he learned in Germany served as the backbone of his success both on and off the pitch, lessons that continued to guide him throughout his career.
Speaking on The Exchange Podcast hosted by Femi Soneye and monitored by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Okocha reflected on how his time in Germany transformed not just his playing style but his outlook on life and professionalism.
