Riot tells us its League of Legends TCG Riftbound has 20 sets lined up already

Riot Games Plans Long-Term Support for League of Legends TCG Riftbound

We spoke with Game Director Dave Guskin about the future of Riot's new trading card game, Riftbound. Although many details remain undecided—such as the exact number of cards per release—the team has already envisioned a multi-year roadmap filled with new content.

Vision for Multiple Expansions

Riftbound has just launched its debut set called Origins. Despite being in its early phase, the developers have brainstormed ideas far ahead, outlining potential arcs stretching through the 2020s.

"I think we got up to, like, 2030," Guskin said. "So about 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 sets."

He emphasized that these plans are preliminary and many concepts are still just rough sketches rather than confirmed releases.

"The further out in the future it is, the less confident I am that it's actually going to be that," Guskin explained.

Ongoing Experimentation with Game Design

Since Riftbound is a new entry into the trading card game space, Riot Games continues to explore what a set should look like and how it should function. The team is cautious about applying conventions from other trading card games, recognizing Riftbound’s unique identity.

"We're a totally new game, and I don't know that I can say that what's worked for other TCGs will work for us," said the Game Director.

Summary

Riftbound is entering its foundational stage with ambitious plans for numerous expansions, but Riot remains flexible as it experiments with the game’s direction.
