Jay Som has unveiled the video for "Past Lives," a collaboration with Paramore’s Hayley Williams, ahead of her performance at Pitchfork Festival London on Saturday, November 8. The track comes from her first album in over six years, Belong, and has quickly become a fan favorite, known for its slow-burn indie charm.
The animated video, directed by Daniel Topete, vividly captures the song’s theme of spiraling reflection through rich colors and imagery. Released earlier this year on Lucky Number Records, Belong marks Jay Som's confident return after a long hiatus from her solo career.
With Belong, she returns prominently as a solo artist, earning strong praise from critics.
The Observer described the album as “a reminder of why she’s one of the most quietly brilliant artists around.”
DIY called it “assured, emotionally rich and full of depth.”
The Guardian praised "Past Lives" as “the perfect soundtrack to getting introspective as the dark nights draw in.”
Regarding the album, Jay Som explained it is about “trying to find where I fit after stepping away for a while.” Through 11 tracks, she explores this search for place and identity.
Author's summary: Jay Som's "Past Lives" video and album Belong mark a heartfelt and acclaimed return, blending introspective indie sounds with vivid storytelling.
