Sarah Ferguson, the former Duchess of York, was known for her extravagant spending habits. After marrying Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, her spending reached remarkable levels. One notable incident highlighted her excess: she was fined nearly £1,000 for carrying more than 50 pieces of excess luggage on a first-class flight from New York.
The luggage contained items valued at around £33,000, including a £515 teddy bear that she intended to fly home despite restrictions. A Heathrow baggage handler remarked at the time,
“Not even Joan Collins has this much.”
The palace did not disclose who covered the costs of Sarah’s expenses on this occasion.
Sarah’s financial advisor, John Bryan, revealed that she was spending over £860,000 annually. This amount included £150,000 on gifts, £50,000 on flowers, and £50,000 on parties.
Before marrying, Sarah had a typical upper-class girl’s work history, including cleaning ski chalets and working at a publishing company. She shared on the Swedish TV show Skavlan about her earlier jobs:
“I cleaned lavatories when I was 18 and graduates' bedrooms; they all left it very messy. And then the waitress in a strudel house.”
Sarah Ferguson's spending habits after her marriage exemplified extravagant excess, reflected in her costly fine for excess luggage and high annual expenditures.
