Canada Post Begins Layoffs Amid Ongoing Mediation with CUPW

On October 30, 2025, CUPW negotiators for both postal bargaining units met with Canada Post representatives and federal mediators for the first time since October 3. The union aimed to resume talks to advance negotiations, with further discussions scheduled in the coming days.

Meanwhile, CUPW’s rotating strikes continue. Members in the Quebec Region have intensified their actions by refusing to process and deliver unaddressed flyers (Neighbourhood Mail).

“We all have a part to play in our fight for public services, good jobs and a sustainable public post office. The negotiators thank all members for their continued support,” said Jan Simpson, CUPW National President.

At the same time, Joël Lightbound, Minister of Government Transformation, Public Works and Procurement responsible for Canada Post, has expressed readiness to approve significant job cuts. Experts estimate that up to 10,000 jobs might be lost due to restructuring at the Crown Corporation.

This week, the Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimates received testimony from Minister Lightbound regarding these developments.

Summary

Canada Post has begun layoffs as part of its restructuring, while union negotiations continue amid rotating strikes and potential large-scale job losses.
