Sam Ryder, the singer-songwriter famous for his 2022 Eurovision hit Space Man, will take the lead role in Jesus Christ Superstar at the London Palladium next summer. Ryder helped revive the UK’s Eurovision success by finishing second in the contest and will now make his theatrical debut in this rock opera.
This is a reimagined version of director Timothy Sheader’s 2016 production, originally staged at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre. The show had two more runs there before transferring to the Barbican and then touring the UK and US.
“It is thrilling to have a new version created especially for the Palladium. In Sam we have a true superstar to play the iconic title role,” said producer Michael Harrison.
Ryder called Jesus Christ Superstar “one of the biggest institutions in musical theatre the world’s ever known” and expressed his honour to follow “rock vocal titans like Ian Gillan and John Farnham.”
Andrew Lloyd Webber, owner of the Palladium, originally created Jesus Christ Superstar with lyricist Tim Rice as a 1970 concept album. Ian Gillan performed as Jesus Christ, depicting his final days. The show moved to Broadway in 1971 and opened in London in 1972 with Paul Nicholas as Jesus. By its 1980 closing, it was the longest-running musical in West End history.
