Unmasking Illusion of Power in ‘Maharaniko Jatra’

The new theatrical production ‘Maharaniko Jatra’, directed and conceptualised by Dipal Baral, will premiere at Kantipur Theatre, Gairidhara, starting November 10. The performances will take place every evening at 5:00 pm, except Wednesdays. The play is presented by Kantipur Film Academy.

‘Maharaniko Jatra’ features an ensemble cast including Usha Rajak, Raj Neupane, and Suhana Acharya, among others. The story unfolds within a traditional structure and examines how illusions of power, social hierarchies, and outward appearances influence human values and interactions.

“The play urges Nepali society to rise above superficial glamour and the pretense of power to seek truth and human values. It poses a critical question: Are we lost in the dazzle of authority, or are we pursuing genuine humanity?”

— Director Dipal Baral

Through the Queen’s evolving narrative, the play explores how media influence, vanity, and societal pressure distort true values. Her embrace of ‘minimalism’ and the effort to discard excess possessions symbolize an internal struggle within Nepali society to find balance between age-old traditions and modern aspirations.
