Many people view nails as purely decorative—something to paint, shape, and polish. In reality, they can reflect important aspects of your overall health. Subtle changes in nail colour, texture, or shape may indicate what's happening inside your body, from nutrient deficiencies to infections.
To understand which nail changes are harmless and which require medical attention, we turned to Tinu Bello, an A-list manicurist and senior Mylee ambassador, as well as guidance from the NHS and dermatologists.
“I always tell clients that nails are a window into your overall health,” says Bello.
According to Bello, yellowing, thickened, or brittle nails can signal that your nails are “crying out for help.” Nails that become crumbly or start lifting from the nail bed often point to an underlying issue.
Persistent yellowing may also result from long-term nail polish use, smoking, or some medications. If discolouration doesn’t fade over time, Bello recommends consulting a GP.
Brittle, peeling, or discoloured nails can reveal internal health problems or nutrient deficiencies, making them valuable indicators of overall wellbeing.
