The New York City Marathon made history with a new course record in the women's race and the closest finish ever in the men's competition. Kenyan runner Hellen Obiri set a new women's record, winning the race in 2 hours, 19 minutes, and 51 seconds.
Obiri ran alongside 2022 winner Sharon Lokedi until pulling away in the final mile, finishing 16 seconds ahead. She surpassed the previous record of 2:22:31 held by Margaret Okayo since 2003.
“I am so happy to run the course record,” Obiri said. “With 1K to go I felt like I was so strong. I have something left in my tank.”
Defending champion Sheila Chepkirui finished third. All three women surpassed the previous course record on a cool day with temperatures in the 50s Fahrenheit at the start.
In the men's race, Benson Kipruto of Kenya claimed victory in his first New York City Marathon appearance, edging compatriot Alexander Mutiso by just three-hundredths of a second. Kipruto completed the race in 2:08:40.
Kipruto and Mutiso broke away from the chase group by Mile 24. Kipruto appeared to have secured the win with 200 meters left, but Mutiso surged in the final 50 meters before narrowly missing the win.
This finish set a new standard for closeness, surpassing the 2005 race decided by one second.
The 2025 New York City Marathon showcased record-breaking performances and an unprecedentedly close men's finish, highlighting the strength and competitive spirit of Kenyan runners.
