Anthony Hopkins reflects on his past comments about his daughter Abigail in his newly released memoir We Did OK, Kid. The 87-year-old actor shares his thoughts on family, sobriety, and past mistakes.
Hopkins acknowledges that he once spoke about his daughter coldly during a 2018 interview, where he stated that he didn’t care about her life after years of no contact.
“It is true that I have spoken about her in the press coldly,” he admits. “In one regrettable interview, after 20 years of not hearing from her, I said I no longer knew where she was or if she’d ever married or had children, and that at that point I did not care.”
Hopkins writes about his long estrangement from Abigail, now 57, his daughter from his first marriage. He emphasizes how rumors and tabloid stories misrepresented their relationship.
“Though I’ve avoided talking about it, the estrangement has shown up in tabloids in horrific, untrue ways. Some said I got her into drugs or rejected her as a child.”
The actor connects his former coldness to his upbringing, recognizing patterns of emotional distance inherited from his family.
“Though it’s no excuse, I know that was the coldness of my grandfather coming out: Move on! That hardness is my default.”
Today, Hopkins expresses a sincere wish for reconciliation and well-being for his daughter.
“I hope Abigail knows that my door is always open to her. I want her to be well and happy.”
Anthony Hopkins candidly revisits a painful family rift, expressing remorse for past words and hoping for peace with his estranged daughter.
