Over 5 Million Under 65s with Long-Term Health Conditions Risk Missing Flu Vaccine
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) warns that many people who are eligible for the flu vaccine may be unaware of their eligibility. Currently, less than a third (28.9%) of those with one or more long-term health conditions (LTHCs) have received the flu vaccine.
Vaccination Rates and Eligibility
- Approximately 9 million individuals under 65 in clinical risk groups are eligible for the flu vaccine.
- Only 40% of these eligible under-65s were vaccinated during the 2024–25 season, leaving over 5 million unprotected.
- Vaccination uptake is higher among adults aged 65 and over—61.5% this year to date and 74.9% overall last year.
- Despite better coverage, many over-65s with LTHCs still miss out on vaccination.
Health Risks for Clinical Groups
For some clinical groups, the risk of influenza-related mortality is significantly greater compared to the general population:
