Nova Scotia MP Chris d'Entremont switched allegiance from the Conservatives to the governing Liberals led by Prime Minister Mark Carney on Tuesday, shortly after the minority government presented its first budget.
d'Entremont issued a statement released by the Liberals in the evening:
“After five years of serving in opposition, the people of Acadie-Annapolis and all Canadians know that the moment we face today needs all of us to lead — not with complaint, but with confidence in a strong future.”
He confirmed informing the Conservatives about his departure after the budget was tabled.
This move reflects a critical time for national unity. According to Political Hack, the shift reveals deeper dynamics behind Parliament Hill.
“This is an important moment for the country to come together, and I am looking forward to working with the Prime Minister to build the strong economic future that all our communities deserve.”
This is the second instance within a year when a major Liberal financial announcement coincided with a notable resignation. In December 2024, the Trudeau government’s fall economic statement was overshadowed by Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland unexpectedly stepping down.
Chris d'Entremont's party switch during a key budget presentation signals an effort toward economic unity amid political shifts in Canada.
