The helicopter that helped launch STARS finds a new home in Calgary

A retired STARS air ambulance helicopter has arrived at its new home at The Hangar Flight Museum in Calgary. The Airbus BK117, first put into service in 1985, was part of the original fleet that helped launch the non-profit emergency air service.

Over its long career, the helicopter flew numerous missions across Western Canada before being taken out of active duty. It now stands as a tribute to the teamwork and community spirit that have supported STARS over four decades.

“Now, in our 40th year, this historic aircraft stands as a symbol of the remarkable contributions made by the community, for the community,” STARS said in a Facebook post.

According to the organization, more than 100 donors participated in a campaign that brought in over $900,000 to sustain STARS operations, and their names are proudly displayed on the helicopter’s body.

The Hangar Flight Museum wrote that it was “honoured to become the aircraft’s permanent home,” describing it as “an inspiring legacy” that will preserve the story of STARS for generations to come.
