Calgary experienced a foggy morning on Friday that soon changed to snowfall. Snow began falling downtown around 8:30 a.m. as flakes moved southward from the north.
The day started with fog, prompting Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) to issue a visibility advisory. There were also warnings about rain or snow, including the risk of freezing rain.
According to Kevin Stanfield, meteorologist at 660 NewsRadio, the snowfall is brief and unlikely to accumulate significantly.
“Precipitation was in the forecast for the morning hours, but our temperature stayed just cool enough to keep most of that mix as snow. Once it’s gone, it’s pretty much gone, and as we enter the 9 o’clock hour, we can expect most of that to fully back away,” he explained.
He also noted, “Our high today hits 3°C, so any area that caught a new coat will likely see that melt off too.”
Drivers are urged to exercise caution on the roads during this brief snowy period.
Despite the morning’s fog turning into snow, the impact is expected to be short-lived and melting should follow as temperatures rise.
