Antonio Brown, former Central Michigan University athlete and NFL player, has been arrested on attempted murder charges in connection with a Miami shooting incident, Miami Police confirmed.
The charge relates to an event on May 16, when shots were fired following a celebrity boxing match in Miami. Brown was initially detained briefly at the scene but released after giving his statement.
Brown stated on social media at the time: “I had been jumped by multiple individuals who tried to steal my jewelry and cause physical harm to me. Police temporarily detained me until they received my side of the story and then released me. I WENT HOME THAT NIGHT AND WAS NOT ARRESTED.”
According to an Associated Press report from June, Brown was later named in an arrest warrant. He is accused of seizing a handgun from a security staff member and firing two shots at a man with whom he had previously engaged in a fistfight. The victim said one bullet grazed his neck.
Miami Police Chief Manuel Morales confirmed Brown was taken into custody in Newark, New Jersey, where authorities from Miami met him.
Morales said: “Let this serve as a clear message; no matter who you are or where you run, we will pursue the facts, identify you, locate you, and bring you to justice.”
Brown is awaiting extradition to Miami to face charges related to the shooting in the Little Haiti neighborhood.
