Conservative Alberta MP Matt Jeneroux announced he will resign his seat in the House of Commons amid speculation he might cross the floor to join the governing Liberals. The Edmonton Riverbend MP informed Conservative Party Whip Chris Warkentin of his decision on Thursday, without specifying an exact resignation date.
“It was not an easy decision, but it is, I believe, the right one,” Jeneroux wrote in a letter obtained by National Post.
The letter showed little reference to party leader Pierre Poilievre but expressed respect for “the many remarkable individuals” on “both sides of the aisle” in the House of Commons.
Jeneroux first entered Parliament in 2015, and his sudden resignation arrives after a turbulent week for the Conservative Party. This marks the second dramatic departure from the caucus in three days, posing a challenge for Poilievre ahead of a leadership review scheduled for January.
Matt Jeneroux's unexpected step down signals unrest within the Conservative caucus, further complicating party dynamics as key political events approach.
