I want to begin by expressing my regret over the comments made by Senator Dolega and the offensive accusations directed at coalition senators and members. According to Labor, it seems to be an offence to drape oneself in the Australian flag and show pride in it.
Senator Dolega criticized some of us for having the audacity to wear the Australian flag and be proud of our country. He suggested that this patriotism is a form of dog whistling, which is unacceptable.
“How dare Senator Dolega suggest it is dog whistling to be proud of our country and be proud of our flag.”
Our country attracts many people who want to live here because of our success as a nation. Australia has one of the most successful migration histories worldwide. We are a proud migrant nation and proudly multicultural.
This includes Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who have been here for thousands of years, those who arrived decades ago, and recent arrivals. Our multicultural success defines our national identity.
We should celebrate our flag and what it represents rather than be made to feel ashamed of it.
Author's summary: Pride in Australia’s flag symbolizes unity in a diverse and successful multicultural nation that values its rich heritage and immigration history.
